You might be very successful in attracting new members to your paid membership site but if you don’t know how to retain them month after month, it’s no use. Read this article to learn how to keep your subscribers happy and have them onboard for long periods of time.
Keep the Good Content Constantly Pouring
Obviously, your subscribers have voted for you with their money because they are interested in what you have to offer. This is why it is of paramount importance to keep the good content constantly pouring. Nobody says that all your articles must be masterpieces because this is impossible but if you don’t maintain a permanent high quality, you will start losing subscribers for sure.
Drip Feed to Retain Interest
Drip Feeding – Serve Content in Drops. Drip feeding is one of the best strategies to retain user interest. The approach is similar to TV series, where the series ends just when the plot thickens. Similarly, with the right WordPress membership plugin, you can schedule your content in a way that spans from one month into the next.
For instance, if you are starting new series, publish the first one or two parts at the end of this month and announce that the rest will be coming next month. This way if people are interested in the dripped content, they will hurry to renew their subscription for the next month, so they don’t miss the end.
Ensure Good User Experience
Even if your content is top notch, if your site is messy, this doesn’t help. You need to have an easy to navigate site. You wouldn’t like your subscribers to be missing content they paid for simply because they can’t find it, would you? You need to put in visible places all the links to the content your members are entitled to, so that they can find it with ease.
Offer Volume Discounts and Discounts for Prepayment
Volume discounts also work well. For instance, if you have corporate clients, you can offer 3 memberships for the price of two. This might be valuable for a company because it allows 3 separate individuals to be members. Of course, if you are serving the same content to everybody, getting 3 times the same stuff is pure waste of money for the company but if your membership site is around personality (i.e. a paid forum or a professional network), one extra profile for free is always welcome.
However, even if you don’t have corporate clients who will appreciate the volume discount I explained in the first paragraph, you can always give discounts for prepayment. For instance, you can offer 6 months for the price of 5. This way you ensure you will get paid for at least 5 months in advance. Don’t consider the month you are giving for free a loss because if the subscriber dropped after the first month, you would have lost 4 months’ fees instead.
Use Teasers to Announce New Content
Just when your subscribers think they have seen all you can offer, announce new forthcoming stuff – be it new features or new content. You can put the announcement in a visible place onsite or send your users emails. In any case, make sure that the teaser is easy to notice. You can announce when the new stuff is coming (i.e. next month), or you can leave the proposal open to keep them teased even more.
Don’t Forget The Personal Touch
Your subscribers aren’t a crowd – they are separate individuals and it is recommendable to treat them as such. If you have thousands of subscribers you will hardly be able to remember all of them but there are other ways in which you can add a personal touch to their experience.
For instance, if at registration you ask them for their birthday, you can set birthday reminders and congratulate them on the day. You can also send personalized emails in which you address your subscribers by name. All these are small gestures but they help to make your members feel special.
Build a Community
The personal touch is great but you also need to build the sense of community, an exquisite club they are fortunate to belong to. If possible, you can schedule live events (online and offline) to meet in person because this more than anything else creates the feeling you are part of a community made up of real people, not just anonymous nicknames.
Retaining your paid members shouldn’t be that difficult, if you perform according to their expectations. Still, sometimes no matter what you do, even if you are perfect, they won’t stay. Don’t allow this to break you but concentrate on retaining your remaining members and attracting new ones instead.

Guest post by Arun. How can your site recover from Google Panda Update? Google who makes roughly 500 yearly algorithm adjustments recently launched 2.5 version of its famous Panda algorithm as reported by Matt Cutts at twitter “Weather report: expect some Panda-related flux in the next few weeks, but will have less impact than previous updates (~2%).”
Google Panda Updates first came in month of Feb 2011 which affected many top sites like hubpages, squidoo, daniweb etc. Many small publishers who are not concentrating on quality content got affected by this algorithm whose main aim was to reduce the ranking of low quality sites. My site also got affected with this update and I learnt some tips from my mistakes which I would like to share and hope it will also help you if your blog is hit by this new panda update.
Note : If you really want to improve your site then it will take considerable time and efforts.
Google Panda Update Recovery
1. Know your site – Make complete list of your site or blog URLs and analyze the content of each URL carefully. Note the URLs in an excel sheet which needs improvement like those which have very less content, lots of spelling mistakes and copied content.
2. Check Page ranking – Note the pages/posts which were at good rank at Google search results before the Panda update and now they have low rankings. Improve the quality of content of these pages, share them on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and submit them to social voting sites like Digg, Mixx with unique headlines.
3. Improve the internal linking of pages – Google loves internal linking as much as external links, so keep that in mind when you write new posts- interlink these with old posts with relevant keywords.
4. Clean your site : It can be done by removing posts/pages which are irrelevant to your site or not adding any significant value to your site.
5. Use more Google services – Use Blogspot, Youtube and Google plus wherever you can, because you will find that Google is giving preference to their sites or content as compared to other sites. e.g YouTube.com and Android.com were among the top winners of increase in traffic from the Panda update. And always update yourself with new additions or improvements in their search algorithm at the Google's webmaster blog.
6. Gain authenticity - If your site has very less page rank then get some good backlinks by submitting on high PR sites (quality) which accept guest posts.
7. Too many ads – may be causing problem for the viewers and interfering with the reader expererience while on your site, so keep control on ads and also select the appropriate location for them.
8. Lessons from past – Curious case of Daniweb & Hubpages : Daniweb.com a IT discussion forum is affected two times by Google Panda update, first in Feb 2011 and 2nd this time, but both time daniweb recovers from this update. Hubpages recovered by implementing subdomains across the site but google clearly states that "Subdomains can be useful to separate out content that is completely different from the rest of a site — for example, on domains such as wordpress.com. However, site owners should not expect that simply adding a new subdomain on a site will trigger a boost in ranking."
9. Listen to Google – Google's Amit Singhal said, "Any time a good site gets a lower ranking or falsely gets caught by our algorithm — and that does happen once in a while even though all of our testing shows this change was very accurate — we make a note of it and go back the next day to work harder to bring it closer to 100 percent…That's exactly what we are going to do, and our engineers are working as we speak building a new layer on top of this algorithm to make it even more accurate than it is."
He adds more “Search is a complicated and evolving art and science, so rather than focusing on specific algorithmic tweaks, we encourage you to focus on delivering the best possible experience for users."
10. Concentrate on your blog niche – and become master in that niche (do not divert from your site niche) .
